Message from the Life Honorary Chairman

Time flies.  Our generation of filmmakers in the past 30 years have to be grateful that they have not only witnessed the golden time of Hong Kong films in the 1980s and 1990s and lived during the most important era of Chinese film, but also undergone a major equipment revolution and experienced the transformation from analogue to digital.  The technical scope involved in these changes is extremely comprehensive, from pre-production to shooting to post-production.  The filmmakers even have to be well versed in cinema projection system and handling of 3D motion imaging.

In the process of technological developments in the area of cinematography, the Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers has spared no effort to co-organize many seminars and workshops in the past 30 years, and continuously explore various aspects of filmmaking and strive to keep up with the latest innovations as learning is a never ending process.

I hope that every member of the Society will not forget their aspiration and will adhere to our mission and strive to achieve our goal and contribute to cinema in Hong Kong and China.

Message from the Chairman

In the blink of an eye, I have entered the creative field of filmmaking more than 30 years and experienced numerous ups and downs with bitter and sweet ones.  Filmmaking has honed and made me what I am now and given me strength, ideas and vision.  It lets me continue to dream in the universe of light and shadow.  Looking back at my 12 senior and best friends of 30 years, they overcame all kinds of difficulties and finally established the Hong Kong Society of Cinematographers that truly belongs to professional cinematographers in Hong Kong.  Since its establishment the Society has played an important role with its aims to enhance the professionalism and encourage exchange of technical information among stakeholders, and these have invigorated me all along.

On the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Society, with support and encouragement from my close friends and doyens, I have accepted to take up the post of Chairman.  Like our predecessors, I would first bring together our members and endeavor to promote and further advance our Society.  We would then keep pace with the times and encourage exchange of technical information among stakeholders so as to benefit the whole film community.  With your kind support, I would continue to do my best to serve our members and contribute to the Society.

Message from the Honorary Technical Consultant

Dear All:

I am Tony(魏天明), I started from the entry level of film industry for 50+ years already, and I witnessing many important changes in Hong Kong Cinematography industry since the 70’s started with the “New Wave” till now, and taking the opportunity that I met and know several founding members of HKSC, including but not limiting to the Life Honorary Chairman – Mr. Arthur Wong.

During our mutual growing up period, I have always appreciated HKSC members’ Professional and commitment spirits, they always try very hard with the ultimate goal of helping film director in story telling visually, and in most of time, under great stress due to limited resources, I must salute to their spirit and professionalism.

At the same time, Cinematography technology also undergoing a great leap revolution, digital cinematography has been radically changed since year 2000, and nowadays, digital technology has been common practice from shooting to digital projection in cinema worldwide. I hope that, within my limited technical knowledge in this profession, I can still contribute my effort to support HKSC in area of technical training to keep up with pace, striving forward to keep up, and mutual sharing.
